Feathered Friends Playshop was wonderful!
Thu, 05/28/2009 - 09:20 — KarenOn May 24th, 2009 we had a great group that came out to the farm to learn all about birds. We had a great presenter from the West Eugene Wetlands, Kimberely, who worked with the older kids while I worked with the younger kids. We touched owl wings, looked at nests, and learned about our state bird, the Western Meadowlark. Then we went down to the pond to look for birds, and we also built our own birdhouses to take home. And some of the kids even had time to pet the horses, while others played the bean bag toss game. It was great fun and a big thank you goes out to Sahra, my assistant, for her great help (especially with the birdhouses!) and to Kimberely, for being able to come teach last minute and doing a great job! Take a look at some of the pictures below! And don't forget- we will be learning more about birds at our Bugs, Blooms, and Birds summer camp in June. See ya there!

Mrs. Kay's class trip to the Museum!
Sat, 05/23/2009 - 21:23 — Karen
We had a great time out at the farm when Jade's class came out to visit and learn about birds. Thanks to Mrs. Kay for bringing out her class, and thanks to all the parents who drove and accompanied us! We did a bird scavenger hunt, learned about birds, got to see farm animals and hold the bunnies, pet the horses, and see frogs and red winged blackbirds down at the pond! We had a nice time eating our lunches down by the pond in the sunshine too. And Sumukhi got to take home one of our baby bunnies- hooray!
We look forward to more school field trips in the future. :)

Pond Life Day was wet and wild
Wed, 05/06/2009 - 17:02 — KarenWe made a splash down at the pond on our School Day-Out Program on Monday! We learned about frogs and their life cycles, made a "spinning wheel" frog life cycle to take home, and dip-netted down at the pond. Lila caught a giant tadpole- it was a bullfrog tadpole and it was HUGE....
We didn't get any pictures of it, unfortunately, as it was raining and we were busy! Everyone thought the tadpole was awesome. It was almost as long as my hand and the round body was about the size of a quarter. We also caught Damselfly larvae, a caddisfly, beetles, fish, and various other mysterious creatures.

Butterfly Garden Day 2009
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 10:20 — Karen
We had a great time at Butterfly Garden Day, which was on April 25th. Thanks to Katie Siepert (pictured) who taught us about Butterflies! We made a beautiful sign for the garden, and put in lots of plants that should attract butterflies. Weeding, watering, and spreading put new soil were some of our other activities in the garden, which will help it to thrive. Thanks to Willa for making a laminated sign which we can hang on the outside of the garden to identify butterflies and their nectar plants. Be sure to come back and help with the garden during summer camp in June! Thanks to Sarah (pictured), and April, our adult volunteers, who helped the kids have fun and get dirty! See you next time!
