Bones Everywhere!
Sat, 04/11/2009 - 11:11 — KarenI was fortunate enough to get to work with Dr. Pat O'Grady at the U of O bone lab last week, to help identify some of the bones we had around the museum. He also turned me on to a cool web site that I posted a link to on our links page. Here it is again:

Check out the cool skeletons and "articulations" people have made (meaning they put the bones together in a life-like way.) Check out the python! And the one of the lion attacking the prey! Thanks Pat for the cool tip! I look forward to bringing another load of bones to you for ID.

Baby Farm Animals Day 2009
Sun, 04/05/2009 - 14:06 — KarenLots of families came out and enjoyed seeing and holding the animals at our Baby Farm Animals Playshop on Sat April 4th. We had ducklings, chicks, and bunnies. Then the kids made a great "eggshell planter" craft to take home. There was so much interest in this event, we had to turn away lots of people who wanted to pre-register! Next year don't forget to call me in mid March to secure your place!

See all the pictures in our photo gallery!
Thanks to everyone who helped out: Willa, Savannah, Tyler, Sahra, and
Lee. Your hard work and dedication made the day so special for
everyone!
Hope to see you on Friday for our Geology School Day Out Program!

Pioneer Day!
Thu, 03/26/2009 - 14:39 — KarenWell, another great day out at the farm! We had a full house of 24 kids and their families! Despite the cold weather we had fun tucked inside the pioneer room. We even enjoyed a visit from Mrs. Mary Skinner (a.k.a. Nancy Gowins) who entertained us with stories about early life in Eugene and coming over the Oregon Trail by covered wagon.
Here is Mrs. Skinner with some of the kids after her talk:

Second Knitting Day and Felting!
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 08:24 — KarenWow, the knitting day was so popular that we did it again, on March 8th, and this time instead of carding, we learned how to do felting. Elyse and Tracy, our teachers, brought some beautiful wool, some of it dyed, and we felted flat pieces of mixed colors- it was so easy! Just hot water and soap and lots of slapping, banging, and rubbing. (The wool, that is! :))I am very excited to do more felting. I always thought it was a hard thing or time consuming. Surprisingly, it was easy and fun! My son, Jade loved it too. His turned out better than mine because he put more wool on it (I was sort of tentative with the amount I used.) So now we have these beautiful pieces of art around our house that we made- and are proud of. I am looking forward to more felting- we will have to do some of that in our Little House on the Prairie summer camp. More on that to come!
